Hello all you lovely people. Lindsay here. It is time for another travel post! I don’t know about you, but I love travel posts. Mostly because if I am writing a travel post it means that I have recently traveled somewhere. Writing about trips I’ve been on is so fun to me. So with that being said, if anyone has some extra money they can throw my way so I can quit my job and continue to just travel and write about it…that would be great. Contact me.
This trip was to Denver, Colorado where I got to see flowers, for the first time in like 7 months. That was nice. Why I live a place where it is cold and dreary half of the year is beyond me. I should be skinnier from all the shivering I do. It is a workout in itself.
The purpose of this trip was the National School Board Convention thing. My boyfriend has to attend every year. Always in different places. Therefore, I tag along for a free hotel room and a week away. During the day my boyfriend goes off and does what he has to do, and I wander off and adventure around on my own. Then, we meet up in the evening for dinner and usually a nap. We are old. And forever tired.
ANYWAY. Originally I intended for this post to go differently. I was going to take you along on my journey from day to day. All the fun stuff I did and saw. Along the same lines as the Montreal post. Then I realized…most of the fun and beautiful things I did and saw were the giant plates of food I was eating at all the different restaurants. Sadly, what I really wanted to do was go to the mountains. Rocky Mountain National Park was an hour and a half away. However, I did not have a car, nor did I have the funds to take a cab there each way. Therefore, my days pretty much revolved around my eating schedule. Just ate breakfast? Now I just gotta make the next few hours go by so I can eat lunch. Basically how I live my life every day. Again I say, I need to go to the gym more. That means, that this post is basically going to be a food tour of Denver. All the places I ate, what I liked, what I didn’t like. Basically, I’m your own personal restaurant guide. Someone give me my own Food Network show.
I arrived in Denver in the evening, with an empty stomach, and a city full of places I’d never been. So what did I eat? Krispy Kreme donuts and pizza. The donuts were a complete impulse purchase. I walked by, walked inside as if my body was involuntarily taking me there, bought 2 donuts and shoved them in my purse. I didn’t necessarily want these donuts. But, I went in and bought them anyway. Just to have them. In my purse. Never know when you might need an emergency pastry. So I might just keep them in my purse from now on. I didn’t even eat them right away. They sat in the hotel room for 2 days before they got eaten. I’m just a lover of all things donuts. I had to get them. Like…I had to. Besides, there isn’t a Krispy Kreme in our neck of the woods anymore. It was taken from us years ago and I have yet to recover from the loss! I have to get them when I get the chance.
After I got my donuts I walked back to the hotel room, put on my pjs, and ordered take out. I found one of the few pizza places that delivered and got myself a large cheese pizza. For myself. Why did I get a large when I was the only one that was going to be eating it? Well, because it was only $1 more than the medium. So, again….I had to. It was obviously the better deal! Also, I am a gross human being that can eat a whole large pizza by herself. And I did. I ate the hell out of that pizza. Until all that was left was a box filled with piles of cheese that I peeled off and didn’t eat. I was ashamed, but also proud. I ate it. By myself. Strong independent women. I don’t need anybody to help with this. I GOT IT. I also got a large stomach ache. But, that is besides the point. I got the pizza from Denver Pizza Company. It was reasonably priced and pretty good. Best pizza I’ve ever had? No. But it got rid of my hunger while also making me 5 pounds heavier.
I bet you are wondering to yourself, “You were alone. So…who took that picture of you?” Well, curious stranger, I propped my camera up on a pile of hotel furniture and took it myself. I did what I had to do. No judging. Also, I am wearing pants. I promise.
On day 2 I woke up and walked my ass to the nearest bakery to get some cupcakes. I remembered walking past one on my way from the train station to the hotel the night before, but it was closed. So that is where I went the next day. It was called Mermaid Bakery. As a Little Mermaid fan, I knew I had to go in. Even if it had nothing to do with the Little Mermaid or even mermaids in general. I don’t know if I got there too late or what, but when I got there they only had a handful of cupcakes. Only 4 flavors! I was a bit disappointed. But, I worked with what I had and ended up getting a chocolate salted caramel cupcake.
It definitely wasn’t the best cupcake I’ve ever had. It was a little dry and the frosting was weird.
For lunch I was reunited with my favorite boyfriend as his plane finally arrived! So what did we do to celebrate our reunion? We ate. We researched and found a place nearby called Sassafrass that had a lot of really good reviews. Guys. This place was amazing. Just the decor inside was enough to make me want to go back. Not to mention the cloth napkins. The cloth napkins had a floral print. HELLO! Any restaurant with floral print napkins is a place I need to be.
Now we get to the food.
The menu was filled with mostly brunch options. I fricken love brunch. Brunch food is the best food. It is the best of breakfast and lunch smooshed together, and covered in a fried egg and hollondaise sauce.
Edin got a catfish po’ boy.
I did something very out of character and got something other than a hamburger or chicken tenders. I got the Cajun benedict. It was shrimp, crabcakes, housemade tasso (whatever the hell that is), and crawfish hash with poached eggs, fried oysters, and smoked cayenne hollandaise. Basically the whole ocean, fried and sitting on my plate. It was really delicious. But then again, everything is good with a runny egg on top. It came with potato cake on the side. Which was essentially hashbrown potatos mixed with cheese.
This place also has a huge selection of cocktails and milkshakes. I got some pink thing. It came in a mason jar. If it comes in a mason jar and has a fun straw, I will drink it.
Our next stop, even though we were stuffed and could not possibly eat another thing, was VooDoo Doughnut. This place was on my list ever since I found out I was going to Denver. I’m sure you’ve heard of it. They have all sorts of crazy, delicious donuts. We got a dozen. Remember when I said we could not eat another thing because we were stuffed? Yeah…. We have literally no self control. None. A voo doo dozen gets you 12 randomly chosen donuts. 6 fried doughnuts and 6 cake doughnuts. This is good, and also annoying. Since they are random, you end up with some that you don’t really care for. AKA: fruit loops. I hate fruit loops. Get off my doughnut.
That purple one right there was my favorite. I can’t tell you what flavour it is, because I literally have no idea. But It had a light, fruity flavour.
This day I wandered. Here. There. Everywhere. Wandering makes one hungry. I started to really crave pizza. In a big way. So I searched for the highest rated pizza place near me and walked over. It took me to Pizza Republica. I was a little hesitant to go there because it was a sit-down restaurant. And I was alone. So I would have to sit at a table by myself, looking like a girl waiting for someone that never shows up. BUT, it was fine. It is kind of nice to sit at a table alone. You get to people watch and just enjoy your food. The pizza was delicious anyway. I’m super glad I went. Wood fired pizza is the best pizza. If you wanna give me money so I can buy a pizza oven, contact me.
The lesson here is: Never be afraid to eat alone. You might miss out on really good pizza. You won’t look weird. People won’ t be staring at you. It’s fine. Even if they are staring at you, it’s probably because you’re pretty. Just let it happen. You’ll be fine.
Before dinner, Edin and I went to a bar called Otra Vez Cantina, just to get some drinks. It was happy hour after all. We got margaritas and lordy lord they were strong. We watched the bartender pour far too much alcohol in each one. However, we did get queso dip and chips and they were delicious. The chips were thicker than your average, but they were so good. I also wanna pour that cheese dip over everything. It would taste good poured over a shoe for goodness sake.
The inside of the bar was really cool looking.
We were treated to dinner at a restaurant called Marlowe’s. It was fancy, and expensive, and delicious. When I first saw the menu I wasn’t very excited. It was a lot of fancy things that did not appeal to me. There were no french fries. NONE AT ALL. I ended up getting the pan roasted Alaskan halibut. Mostly because it came with potatoes. Close enough to a french fry I suppose.
Low quality photo. You’re welcome. Edin got steak or something. What else is new.
This day I went back to Otra Vez Cantina to get lunch. The food looked really good the night before when I starred at 2 girls next to me at the bar who ordered an entire plate of quesadillas and they didn’t even eat them. They just sat there. Like hello? You have a pile of delicious looking quesadillas right in front of you…if you aren’t going to eat them, slide them down and i’ll eat them. “Edin, look. They aren’t even eating them! What the heck!”- Lindsay
I said that multiple times.
I decided I just had to go back and try the food that looked so good the night before. Once again, I sat at the bar by myself and ate some quesadillas. The bartender was terrible. The food however, was really good. Of course, after I picked off the heaping wads of cilantro.
Death to cilantro. It ruins everything.
Another low quality photo. I’m on a roll.
In the morning we took a cab farther out of town to go to a big sports store. This is the part of the story where I was put in charge of finding out what time the store opened. This is also the part of the story where I looked at the time for the wrong day and we got to the store an hour before it opened. Oopsie. SO, we took a walk around the neighborhood and found another donut shop. I said “OOO LET’S GO” So we did. It was called Habit Doughnut Dispensary.
We got a raspberry donut and it was one of the best donuts I had on the trip.
5280 Burger Bar. The place to be. They have a handful of gourmet burgers. They also have an “I can’t decide” option. It was practically made for me. If my life were made into a movie, that would be the title, with Anne Hathaway as the leading role because apparently, that is who I look like. You can get 2 different burgers in slider form. Which is exactly what we did! I got a burger with pulled pork on top, cheese, and bacon. Edin got the 5280 prime burger. It had cheddar, an onion ring, and homemade steak sauce. Edin’s burger was fantastic. Mine was good, but I shouldn’t get meat piled on top of other meat. It just ends up being a lot of meat. Wait for it…meat. Sorry. Just wanted to say it again. The only downside to this place is that none of the burgers come with any sides. So if you want fries, you have to order them separately. This is stupid. Burgers should come with fries. Always. The burgers alone were at least $15. For that price, you should get fries with it. It’s 2017. Just sayin.
There is also an ice cream shop inside the restaurant. So that is always good.
For dinner we ate twice. At two different restaurants. Because that is who we are as people. I was really craving Italian. However the restaurant I wanted to go to had an hour wait. So we made a reservation and then were left wandering the streets. We ended up at Yard House. A restaurant with apparently one of the biggest beer selections. Edin got beer, and then we got crab cakes. They had papaya, passion fruit, and mango on them. At first I thought it was going to taste weird. However, it was actually really good. The fruit really lightened up the crab cakes. Who knew.
Then it was time for our actual dinner reservation. So we ate again. The Italian restaurant was called Maggiano’s. It was right by the hotel and I was eyeing it the entire time we were in Colorado. It was a classic Italian restaurant where everything was homemade on the spot. I got gnocchi with tomato vodka cream sauce, and Edin got Pesto perini mozarella with chicken ricotta meatballs.
I didn’t really care for mine. The gnocchi was cooked a little too long so it was softer than I like. I really liked Edin’s except the meatballs were kind of blah. We were also pretty full before we even sat down to eat here….so that could be a contributing factor to my opinions.
This was our last day and sadly our last meal in Denver. We ended up finding a restaurant that was on Diners, Drive In’s and Dives. Finally! I get to eat at a restaurant that has been on the food channel! I’ve actually been to a Diners, Drive-ins and Dives restaurant before near my hometown..but it was far more exciting to stumble upon on in my travels. It was called Sam’s No.3. It was a diner right up the street from the hotel. Warning: the menu is huge. Pages and pages. You’re gonna need a minute or 8 to look over it. I got the Yukon Hash. It was potatoes topped with onions, peppers, cheese, hollondaise sauce and a fried egg. It was really big and really good. Edin got a Greek breakfast burrito thing. Tasted exactly like a gyro in burrito form! I am not lying when I say it was the size of a baby. Easily enough for 2-3 people to share. Massive.
I felt like I would never eat again after this meal. Don’t worry though. I did.
Overall, out of all the trips I have taken, I had some of the best food in Denver! I don’t know where I will be going in the world next, but I will make sure to take you all along on the journey!
