I was at work a few nights ago, hiding a pop tart in the pocket of my sweater (as per usual), and suddenly it occurred to me- Why the heck have I never tried to make my own toaster pastries before?! I left work that night with a mission that involved something other than seeing how many episodes of ‘The OA’ I could watch before I fell asleep. (That alone is miraculous in itself.) I was determined to make my own toaster pastries, and I am so glad that I did.
Before we get into this I will first say that pop tarts make up 75% of my diet. I know, it’s horrible. I get one out of the vending machine almost every night that I work. Which lately is every single day. But, there is something about the agony of retail that makes me crave frosted strawberry pop-tarts. I don’t know what it is. But around 7pm, every night, I feel like I actually need one to survive. So, obviously, to avoid my doom, I get one. Even when I tell myself I’m not going to do it, I do it anyway. Even when the universe tells me not to get one by trapping the pop tart in the machine, literally preventing it from getting to me, I still get it. How? I shake the crap out of the machine until it obeys me. Because I have no self control. Zero self control. Send help.
I’m not sure if this is considered sacrilege or not, but I NEVER actually toast toaster pastries. Nope, never. I cannot stand when they are toasted, so I just eat them straight out of the package. I will also say that I refuse to eat a pop tart that isn’t frosted. What is even the point? It’s like eating just a bowl of cereal with no milk in it. IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE SENSE.
This entire recipe is pretty simple because it is all made right in the food processor. The least amount of dishes I can dirty in the kitchen the better. Because I hate washing dishes almost as much as I hate doing laundry. Does this make me a lazy human being? Yes. Yes it does.
Why am I like this?
But with that being said, these were surprisingly easy and they came out really well! Strawberry is my favorite flavor, so I knew I wanted to try and make my own version. But, THEN I got the earth shattering idea to add Nutella to them as well. Why? Because Nutella and strawberries are one of the greatest food combinations ever brought into fruition. And also because I wanted to make them even more unhealthy than they already were. Lauren: Making things as unhealthy as possible since 1991.
Again, why am I like this?
These are great to experiment with. Add whatever kind of filling you want and see how they turn out! **I would not recommend putting these in your toaster (the kind that shoots the stuff out the top) The glaze would melt immediately, and you would be left with a mess and quite possible a house fire. But if you wanted to warm them up, you could pop them in a conventional oven for a few minutes. Enjoy!
We hope you have a great weekend!
