Everyone loves doughnuts right? People are just born loving doughnuts. I think I learned that in science class once. You’re born with fingers, toes and a love for doughnuts. Doughnuts have always been considered a breakfast food. Why? I actually have no idea. They are literally made up of dessert ingredients. Dough. Frosting. Sprinkles. I’m not complaining though. I’ll eat pastries for breakfast any day. And any night. And any afternoon. Pretty much any time of day or night I’ll eat them.
So why on earth have I never thought to cut them in half and stuff them with things?!?!?
Let me tell you a quick and delicious story. Last summer at the state fair, I stumbled across a glorious stand that was selling hamburgers. But wait, there’s more. The buns were glazed doughnuts. They literally cut a doughnut down the middle and used it as sandwich bread. Since then my life has never been the same. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS. I want to use doughnuts in place of bread for everything, for the rest of forever.
It might sound a little odd if you’ve never tried it before. Trust me though. The sweet of the doughnut works really well with the savory of the burger.
So here we are. A year later. We’ve finally come around to making our own doughnut sandwiches. Ideally, we wanted to make homemade doughnuts for this. Ya know, the ones with the dough, and the yeast, and all that. We haven’t quite mastered that yet though, so stay tuned. One day we will get it. Then it will be doughnuts for everyone! You get a doughnut! You get a doughnut! Everybody gets a doughnuttttttt!
With that being said, for this we just went to the store and bought some doughnuts. We used glazed but you could use any kind your heart desires. We also made sure to wait until the next day to use them. Day old doughnuts are a little firmer and easier to work with.
We cut the doughnuts horizontally and stuffed them with homemade whipped cream and strawberries. Man oh man were they good but make sure to keep them stored in the fridge.
There are endless possibilities when it comes to doughnut sandwiches. We made some other variations that we will be sharing in the near future! So stay tuned!
