Why we love this recipe
I don’t think we are alone when we say that we grew up eating poptarts. We still eat them. Breakfast, lunch, snack, you name it poptarts are the perfect treat. When we realized how easy it was to make them ourselves at home we were instantly hooked. We use pre-made pie dough to make these which truly makes them so quick and easy to throw together.
Making them at home is also great because you can fill them with whatever your heart desires! We chose apple butter because it’s apple season and we love it. But you could also fill them with any kind of jam, chocolate hazelnut spread, or any other kind of spread.
What you need to make these poptarts
- Pre Made pie dough sheets
- Apple butter (or any other kind of spread)
- An egg yolk
- Powdered Sugar
- Milk
- Ground Cinnamon
- A little bit of water
That’s it. That’s all you need. Just cut your pie sheets into the shapes and sizes you want, making sure you have an equal amount of fronts and backs. Then, place about a tablespoon of filling into the center of half of your dough cutouts and place the other non-filled halves over the tops. Using a fork, push the edges all around the pastry together to help seal them. Brush each pastry with a little of the egg wash mixture, and then pop them in the oven until they are lightly browned and beautiful.
Once removed from the oven, allow them to cool slightly and then drizzle them with as much or as little cinnamon glaze as you want!
How to store homemade poptarts
These poptarts are best served right out of the oven when they are warm and crispy. However, if you want to save some for another day we suggest leaving off the glaze and storing them in an airtight container. When you’re ready to eat them you can leave them at room temperature or pop them in the toaster for a minute and then top them with the glaze.
Happy baking!
